The Estonian Scientific Computing Infrastructure (ETAIS) is a nationwide e-infrastructure that combines computers, data storage devices, network solutions, software and support services. It also includes server rooms with the necessary power and cooling system and provides technical support to users.

ETAIS provides cloud services, high-performance computing (HPC), hosting and management of scientific web applications and resources for data repositories. ETAIS also provides access to Europe’s fastest supercomputer, LUMI, located in Finland.

ETAIS services are intended for research and development institutions and science-based companies. ETAIS serves nine roadmap objects, including the Language Data Research Infrastructure (KeTa), ELIXIR Estonia, the Estonian Genomics Center, and the National Center for Translational Medicine and Clinical Research (RSKTK). Public sector users can use ETAIS services via the State Cloud.

The ETAIS consortium partners are the University of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology, the Institute of Chemical and Biological Physics, and the Ministry of Education and Research.

Research infrastructure goals and vision

ETAIS helps Estonian science and business to remain competitive by providing access to cutting-edge computing. This includes computing power, secure data management, user support and expert advice. The main users are researchers in the fields of bioinformatics, medicine, data mining, language technology, chemistry, materials science, climate research and physics.

ETAIS also supports the state’s data policy and the training and operation of artificial intelligence solutions in the public sector. ETAIS also connects Estonia’s e-infrastructure with international partners.

ETAIS represents Estonia in the Nordic cooperation network NeIC and develops the Blower service, which is used in several countries, including the LUMI supercomputer. In addition, ETAIS participates in projects that develop quantum computing and secure archiving of personal data.

ETAIS is also part of the LUMI consortium and is helping to create the next generation of supercomputers.
